Aromatherapy for Headaches

When you are down with a headache, what is the first thing you do? For most, the fasted response will be to swallow few tablets of pain killers, Paracetamol being the usual culprit. A headache can simply result from stress or emotional distress. Some times it can be due to a medical disorder like high blood pressure, anxiety, or depression. In some cases, a headache can be chronic, which makes the victims high comfortable and unable to do serious work.

Here’s the good news, whenever you find yourself, battling a headache, try essential oils!

Does that term sound familiar? If you still don’t know anything about essential oils are then I suggest you go ahead and read this article on it. But if you are very much aware of them, then you need to also know that essential oil can help you relieve minor headaches and improve your overall mode. In this article, I will show you how to cure a minor headache with essential oils. Please note the remedy in this article does not in any way cure the root cause of the headache, it just gives you the immediate relief you need that moment.
I will start by giving you a list of the oils that can do the trick, then show you how to use them

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oils contains a significant quantity of the oxide 1,8-Cineole. 1,8-Cineole is said to act as both an anti-inflammatory and an expectorant. Clear sinuses and reduce inflammation. People experiencing headaches due to blocked sinuses may find that inhaling eucalyptus reduces their symptoms.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil contains a significant amount of menthol. Menthol is well-known to help relax and ease tension headaches, muscular aches and pains. It has been used in alternative medicines for thousands of years and known as the most popular essential oil for headache

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is another great essential oil with the power to help treat headaches and improve circulation. Rosemary oil is also Known to help reduce pain and insomnia in people going through opium withdrawal treatment

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Essential Oil has a high percentage of esters (linalyl acetate) and has anti-inflammatory and sedative properties. It is a good oil to use if you are trying to alleviate a headache during the nighttime hours. A 2012 study suggests that the inhalation of lavender essential oil can be a safe and effective treatment to manage migraine headaches.

Chamomile Oil

Chamomile Essential Oil has a high percentage of esters (isobutyl angelate), and therefore, offers anti-inflammatory and sedative properties. A particular research showed that chamomile oil might improve some symptoms of anxiety and depression. Chamomile oil helps cure headache caused by stress and anxiety

Usage

Essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil, such as ( Almond Oil, Apricot Oil, Avocado Oil or Coconut Oil) before they can be applied to the skin. Once diluted, the oil can be massaged into the temples and across the forehead.

Inhaling oil: Essential oils can be inhaled by adding a few drops to a tissue and holding the tissue under the nose and breathing deeply.

Using a compress: Create a compress by soaking a towel in cold water with a few drops of essential oil. The compress can be applied to the forehead or neck.

Adding oil to the bath: Adding a few drops of essential oil to a hot bath can be a relaxing way to treat a headache.

To use I suggest you Drop 1-4 drops onto your fingers and massage onto your forehead, back of your neck and/or temples. Avoid getting the oils near your eyes.

Suggested Essential Oils and Blends for Use in the Recipe
(Carrier oils can be Almond Oil, Apricot Oil, Avocado Oil or Coconut Oil)

  • Blend #1: 8 Drops Lavender Oil, 4 Drops Chamomile Oil, 1 oz. Carrier Oil
  • Blend #2: 4 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil, 4 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil, 1 oz. Carrier Oil
  • Blend #4: 4 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil, 8 Drops Lavender Essential Oil, 1 oz. Carrier Oil
